Character Analysis Essay:
Have you ever wonder what people are actually thinking of you? Do you ever think about how people describe you to others? I haven't, but I have wondered who others are and how they would describe others. I have been thinking about a character named Piggy lately, `Piggy is a character in the book “Lord Of The Flies” by William Golding. The book “Lord Of The Flies” is about a plane that crashes on an island that has no civilization and no adults. The plane that crashed was filled with kids that were getting evacuated from the war. In this book there are about 20 kids on the island, they all have the same goal which is to get rescued but they all choose to try and reach that goal in a very different and unique way. There was one character in this book that had a lot of traits and that character was named Piggy, he had many traits many big ones were his intelligence, emotion and a lack of physical capabilities die to his asthma and weight.
In the book “Lord Of The Flies” the character Piggy carried many traits. The trait he carried throughout this novel was his unbelievable amount of intelligence. His intelligence was a huge factor to this book, he portrayed intelligence a lot throughout this book, he portrayed his knowledge by getting the groups of boys together and trying to make the group be civilized, so thats why he came up with the idea of the conch. “We can use this to call the others, they will come when they hear us" (Page 17). The conch idea is one of the many intelligent ideas that Piggy came up. The conch idea is a conch that you need to have in your possession to speak, that was an idea Piggy came up with because he wanted to try and keep the island civilized, but when you had the conch you could also blow into it if you had it and you could blow into the conch and you can call a meeting by doing so. I think the conch can really show his in intelligence because at his age no kid would think that it could help them in this situation, a kid of his age would just think “oh this looks cool”. But what Piggy did was very intelligent and it overall helped the kids on the island for awhile. "I'll expect we'll want to know all their names, said the fat boy, we ought to make a list. We ought to have a meeting." (Page 11). That is a quote that was spoken by piggy and it is showing his intelligence because he is trying to find out how many kids are on the island and how many people there are. It is intelligent because he was being very mature and smart about what he was doing so he called a meeting so that they can try and become civilized. But I think piggy showed a lot of intelligence throughout this novel and that is why I find his intelligence so important and such a big factor in the novel.
But beside the fact that Piggy was very intelligent he had other traits throughout the novel. Another trait portrayed by Piggy during this novel were his emotions. Piggy was a very emotional character in the novel. " I don't care what they call me, as long as they don't call me what they used to call me in school...they use to call me piggy" (Chapter 1). This quote from the very obese character Piggy is basically showing the emotional connection he has to his name of Piggy. When the other boys on the island call him Piggy he gets very angry and upset. He gets upset and angry because he was bullied with that name when he was at his boarding school in England. When he was telling Ralph about the name the boys called him he then got a sense of fear.He was getting a sense of fear because when he told Ralph he feared that all the boys would find out about his name and then get made fun of again, and that would have had to be his biggest fear throughout the novel. Piggy was definitely portrayed as emotional character in "Lord Of The Flies". In most cases throughout the novel his emotions ended up being a very harmful trait to Piggy because his emotions would make him vulnerable to the boys on the island. But Piggy’s emotions were definitely a big trait that Piggy portrayed a throughout the novel.
Even though Piggy was very intelligent and emotional, Piggy also had many other roles during the novel. He had a role that none of the boys had on the island, his job was to keep the island civilized and use all of his adult like characteristics on the island to try and keep everybody alive. Piggy’s role was very challenging because he had to try and keep 20+ boys on an island civilized and that would be very difficult. But Piggy had many flaws, many of his flaws being flaws that an adult would have especially with the obesity epidemic skyrocketing, he had very bad eyesight, has medical conditions one of them being his asthma which had a big affect on Piggy, and he was also very out of shape due to his weight problems and his obesity. But the most important thing that he carried were his adult characteristics because they were a very essential part to the kids survival in the island. " How can you expect to be rescued if don't put things first and act proper?" (Chapter 2). That is what Piggy is saying to Jack, Piggy said that to Jack during a heated argument. This quote is showing his adult characteristics because an adult would prioritize certain things that a child would not prioritize. An adult would definitely prioritize rescue, a child would not. The quote also shows his adult like characteristics because a kid would prioritize other things such as food which is important but not something you should worry about first, something like rescue would be the first thing to prioritize because what if a plane flies by that day and you won't know when the next plane will come and that is why Piggy was such a very big role in this novel. But that is how he made such a big role to the group of boys on the island and that is how I think Piggy shows the characteristics of an adult.
But overall in the novel "Lord Of The Flies" by the notorious writer William Golding, many things went wrong. You could say it was hell on earth, can you imagine 20+ boys on an island with no adults? Could you Imagine if we lived on a planet with no rules? It would be like civilization didn't exist at all, people like piggy would be our only hope for survival. So all in all piggy was a very big role in the novel because he portrayed a lot of very good traits, the traits were his intelligence, his emotion, and his maturity.
