Description:
“Power, Privilege and the Purse” a project that was discussing the question of "How real is the American Dream". This project is meant to help students with financial planning as well as analyzing social and economic issues. In this project we had learned about Financial Planning, as a class we investigated the affordability of attending a four - year and we created a budget and a financial plan using the "Three Bucket System". As a class we also Analyzed Social and Economic Issues, within this we investigated the social impact of debt and wealth accumulation. We also investigated into how it relates to the wealth gap and the cycle of poverty. Within the analyzing of social and economic issues we had also used mathematical modeling and statistics to be able to better understand and analyze the issues discussed that were discussed in humanities portion of this project. In the humanities portion of this project we had learned about wealth inequality, minimum wage, education inequality, and the criminal justice system.
Process:
Throughout the duration of this project we have completed many tasks, the project was a joint project with our Humanities class and because of this we had to complete humanities work in order to move on with our mathematics tasks. The only task that we completed through the duration of this project that didn't rely on our humanities work was our financial plan. The financial plan was able to teach us about how we should pay for college, take out loans, as well as how to manage taxes. For the financial plan we also had to complete extensive research about the colleges that we would like to attend and from then on we did more research that would teach us how long it will take in order to achieve or financial goals. The next part to this project was creating an infographic that we had to relate to a position paper that we had written in Humanities. The position paper that I had written was about Racial Discrimination in the Workplace and for my infographic I focused on ways that people from other countries are discriminated against in the workplace.

Deeper Learning:
Personally, the most influential part of this project would have to be the knowledge I gained about the economic sustainability in America. I would have to say that the most helpful learning aspect of this project would have to be when we learned about compounding taxes and how we are able to calculate them. Something else that I had found helpful was when we had learned about what aspects can help you get a lower tax rate such as having a high credit score. In addition, learning about the different types of investment opportunities as well as things such as the "The Three Bucket System". Throughout the course of this project I have definitely gained a lot of vocabulary, I have learned a lot about Credit Score as well as kinds of loans and because of this project I now know what all those terms are. After the San Diego Field Trip and seeing how certain areas are so poverty stricken and now understand that many people nowadays struggle with debt due to the fact that they didn't learn how to manage their money and invest it into savings or other beneficial investments. This project I feel has definitely helped me understand America's Economy and I strongly feel that this project will help with a lot of financial issues in the near future.
“Mind the Gap” Exhibition Reflection:
During the Mind The Gap Symposium my panel and I got to experience and learn a lot due to the amazing guest panelists that came to speak at our panel the Color of Cash. Many would agree that the guest panelists had a lot of amazing things to say and I believe they have opened up the eyes of many. Alejandro Tamayo one of the guest panelists shared a lot of his personal experiences, his stories have taught me about the world we live in today.I have grown as a student throughout the process of this project and I now know about the struggles that many go through everyday just to be able to put food on the table. He has taught me be a lot about the American Dream and how many people who are trying to pursue the dream are not able too. Alejandro told stories about when he was a border patrol agent and he was saddened by the fact that people in America are denying people from other countries who have been walking for days just to be able to make some money in America. Overall the stories our guest panelists shared have taught me a lot about life, they taught me about the everyday struggles that people go through, they taught me about how corrupt the country we call home is.
