Student-Led Comments / Growth and Development Reflection
Directions. Please use these prompts as a guide to write your three-paragraph reflection letter. Your responses should be in complete sentences, with the question included within the response. (Example: “This semester, I have grown the most in the area of. . . “) Your reflection should be no more than one page, single spaced (12 font).
Paragraph 1: Growth
Throughout the semester I have used many skills of a mathematician. I would say that this semester I am most proud of the grades I have received, this is in mathematics and all my other classes. The mathematical practice that I connect with the most would have to be being able to construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others, this is because of the description it gave and I feel that I connect really well with that. The growth and developmental goals really had helped a lot. They kept me motivated to do good and I reached my goal of becoming a better mathematician. The most significant concepts that I learned would have to be concepts relating to the economy and taxes and what not, it will help me with everyday life. As a student I don’t believe that I contributed much to the mathematics class, I feel that I don’t contribute because of my confidence in my own mathematical skills. Overall, I discussed a lot in small group discussions though, I feel more confident in them. I don’t really know how to graph or show the growth of my intelligence, but I would have to say that I have definitely grown a lot as a mathematician.
Paragraph 2: Areas of Development
Something that has challenged me has been logarithms. When I was first introduced to logarithms I believe it was a student teacher who had given the lesson and I was still quite confused. When it came to overall learning how to do them I took time and I would ask my peers for some help and they helped me come up with this “system” which eventually helped me grasp the topic, that is how I showed grit and perseverance. I believe that next time I could ask questions during the lesson to better understand these subjects. I’m not quite sure but I do remember that they were the last two and they were probably due to my lack of attention to detail.
Paragraph 3: Hopes for Next Semester
As for next semester, I still hope to continue to grow as a mathematician and I hope to be able to grasp more subjects. I also hope to be able to participate more and become a more confident mathematician by knowing that everyone in the classroom is learning with me and it is okay to make mistakes. Overall that is all I have to say for this Student Led Comments, I hope these helped you get an insight into my academics as well as learn a little bit about myself.

Paragraph 1: Growth
- What are you most proud of this semester and why? Be specific and use evidence if possible.
- Reflect on the Standards of Mathematical Practice and “Growth and Development Goals” that you set at the beginning of the year. Select the goal in which you have shown the most growth. Describe exactly how you have grown. Use evidence to support your claims.
- What were the most significant concepts that you learned this semester? How could these concepts or ideas be useful to you in real life? Explain how/when you can use them.
- Describe how you contributed to the learning environment in the classroom. Site examples of how you contributed to whole-class discussions and small groups discussions. Describe how this has affected your ability to learn and grow as a mathematician.
- Describe how your “intelligence” has grown through your efforts in the class this year.

Paragraph 2: Areas of Development
- Tell me about something that has challenged you or that you didn’t understand. What did you do to work through it and understand it? How did you show grit and how did you persevere through it? What could you have done better during this time?
- In which mathematical practice or growth and development goal did you find the least growth this year? What kept you from growing in this area? What could you have done differently?

Paragraph 3: Hopes for Next Semester
- What are your hopes and goals for next semester? Please be specific and make sure to address academics, behavior and participation.
- Any other closing statements you’d like to share.
